Morning Minute 10.20.26

Are You Chasing Results—or Transforming People? How great leaders develop people, build championship teams, and achieve lasting success.

Recently, someone challenged me to explain a statement I use frequently:

"Information without transformation is wasted energy."

My response was that information changes what we know.

Transformation changes who we are—and who we become.

Understand that transformation requires more than knowledge or good intentions.

It requires changing how we think, behave, and perform.

For leaders, that means graduating from managing outcomes to developing the people, processes, and disciplines that produce superior results.

Two championship coaches demonstrated this principle through different approaches.

Football coach Nick Saban realized that concentrating only on winning games wasn't producing his desired results.

So, he changed his leadership approach.

Instead of concentrating on the scoreboard, he emphasized setting the example, caring about his players, creating a shared vision, establishing values-based standards, and executing one play at a time.

Basketball coach Pat Riley introduced his Career Best Effort program, measuring players' individual contributions after every game—and challenging them to continually improve their performances by at least 1%.

Both understood that consistently winning championships requires developing people capable of performing at championship levels—individually and as a team.

Their experiences illustrate five responsibilities transformational leaders must embrace.

1. TRANSFORM YOURSELF FIRST.

Your attitudes, habits, and example establish the standards others observe. Become the leader your people want to follow.

2. DEVELOP PEOPLE, NOT JUST PERFORMANCE.

Your responsibility isn't simply getting work done through others. Help people discover and develop the capabilities they may not even recognize in themselves.

3. CREATE A SHARED VISION.

Give people something more meaningful to pursue than a numerical target. Help them understand what they can become and accomplish together.

4. BUILD VALUES INTO DAILY BEHAVIORS.

Integrity, accountability, preparation, respect, and teamwork must become practiced behaviors—not simply words on a wall.

5. MASTER CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT.

Identify the actions most likely to produce superior results. Practice them, measure progress, learn from mistakes, and continually improve.

Saban and Riley didn't abandon winning. They developed people and disciplined processes that made consistent winning achievable.

Now, consider your own leadership.

Are you chasing today's results—or developing a team capable of winning today, tomorrow, and beyond?

Choose one of these five principles. Identify one change you need to make in yourself before expecting change from others.

Then, begin practicing it today.

Transformation isn't simply achieving better results.

It's becoming the kind of leader—and building the kind of team—capable of producing consistently better results.

Keep Learning! Keep Leading!

And remember, Information without transformation is wasted energy.

That is today's Morning Minute.
