What if the biggest obstacle to your team's growth isn't your people? What if it’s the example they see every day? Before expecting your team to change...ask yourself: Am I already demonstrating the behaviors I expect from the team? Today, let’s examine an important first step in team transformation as we employ the T.A.S.T.E. leadership model. Truth: Truth isn't something you require. It's something you model. Accountability: Accountability isn't something you enforce. It's something you practice first. Support: Support isn't what you tell people. It's what they experience. Trust: Without truth – there can be no trust. Trust isn't something you demand. It's earned. Empowerment: Empowerment isn't announced. It's developed through competence and trust. Have you ever noticed a team transformation when only the leader was replaced? In North Africa, George Patton assumed command of the American II Corps after the devastating loss at Kasserine Pass. One month later, employing Patton's battle plan, American forces defeated a German counterattack at El Guettar. After years of disappointing seasons at Alabama, Nick Saban was hired. He changed the culture and expectations, eventually winning six national championships. Same organizations. Different leadership. Different expectations. Different results. Leadership isn't merely changing what people expect of themselves. It's preparing them—and then giving them a better plan for succeeding. Here are some pertinent questions to ask as you begin the transformation that you desire: 1. If your team described your honesty, what would they say? 2. What are you asking your team to do that you aren't consistently doing yourself? 3. Who on your team needs encouragement today? Who deserves recognition? 4. Would your team describe you as trustworthy? What evidence would they give? 5. If you were absent tomorrow, who is ready to lead? If no one comes to mind...why not? Leaders who utilize and practice truth, accountability, support, trust, and empowerment in their interactions with team members, customers, and clients will accelerate the team transformation that they are endeavoring to create. At the end of each day, ask yourself 3 questions: 1. What did we succeed at today? Why? 2. What did we learn today? Why? 3. What will we do differently tomorrow? Culture…isn't what you say. Culture…is what your people repeatedly experience. Teams rarely rise above the example of their leader. So, before demanding change from your team, become the change you want to create. Keep Learning! Keep Leading! And remember: Information without transformation is wasted energy. That is today’s Morning Minute. *** Einstein's definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results.
