Reader: Three ways to become increasingly valuable in an AI driven workplace Morning Minute 8.28.26 Building Relationships, Gaining Skills, & Creating Influence Three ways to become increasingly valuable in an AI-driven workplace. I recently participated in an online seminar demonstrating how businesses can use AI systems and strategies to perform work previously done by people. It left me with an uncomfortable question: How do individuals become so valuable that they are increasingly difficult to replace? That question is especially important for professionals who have entered the workforce during the past few years. AI can now perform many of the information-based tasks they learned in college and expected to perform in their careers. So, how do you distinguish yourself when everyone has access to similar information and AI tools? Consider three areas: 1st: Building Relationships: AI can provide information. It cannot build your reputation for you. Initiative creates opportunities. Reliability builds credibility. Effective communication gets you noticed by decision-makers. Prioritizing and completing important work demonstrates dependability. Receiving and acting upon feedback demonstrates that you are coachable. These behaviors build something difficult to automate: Trust. And trusted people receive greater opportunities. 2nd: Gaining Skills: Don't compete with AI primarily on what you know. Develop your ability to determine what should be done. Learn to train, organize, and motivate people. Analyze processes. Eliminate waste. Improve efficiency. Identify better products and services—and determine how to create and deliver them. Recognize new markets and find cost-effective ways to reach them. AI can help you perform each of these tasks. Your value comes from determining which problems deserve solving—and using the available tools to solve them. 3rd: Creating Influence: Many professionals incorrectly assume they need a leadership title to have influence. They don't. Become that person others call when a problem needs solving, a process is broken, or the team needs direction. These people become unofficial leaders because others trust their judgment, respect their contribution, and know they will accept responsibility for results. Influence isn't bestowed by a title. It's earned through consistent contribution. And that brings us to perhaps the greatest opportunity of the AI era: AI makes knowledge cheaper while making judgment more valuable. The person who succeeds may not be the person who produces the fastest answer. It will increasingly be the person with the judgment and discernment to question the answer, contextualize it, challenge it, explain it—and accept responsibility for acting on it. So, use AI. Learn from it. Become exceptionally good at it. But don't outsource your judgment to it. Because information can help you know what could be done. Judgment helps you decide what should be done. And remember: Information without transformation is wasted energy! Keep Learning! Keep Leading!
