“How Bad Company Corrupts Good Character!”

Previously, in a Moring Minute entitled Your Habits Create Your Destiny,” we discussed the steps for creating good character: Positive actions create good habits. Good habits create discipline. Discipline creates good character.

But what happens when a person with good character keeps bad company?

Just as there is a process for developing strong character, there is also a process for corrupting it. Because we are known by the company we keep, the people around us will either strengthen our character or slowly erode it.

The downward path often begins by adopting the negative language of losers. This language tears down what is good while promoting what is easy, convenient, or pleasurable. Good character becomes something to mock, while bad language becomes acceptable… even normal.

Bad language leads to bad ideas; ideas that are incompatible with strong character. What we speak about shapes what we think about. And soon, thoughts of pleasure and convenience replace thoughts of discipline and responsibility.

Before long, the discipline that once built good character is traded for unhealthy actions that promise pleasure, popularity, or acceptance. And those repeated negative actions complete the acceptable… even normal..

Simply stated: the company you keep will determine the direction of your life.
Your friends will either pull you downward by weakening your character. Or, lift you upward by reinforcing the rewards of a life built on integrity and discipline.

FINAL THOUGHT:

Parents are not only the first and best teachers of their children; they are their most influential examples. When you display and teach how good character enriches your life, your children gain a clear template for living well.

Scripture makes this truth unmistakably clear in 1 Corinthians 15:33:
“Do not be misled: Bad company corrupts good character1"

That is today’s Morning Minute.
