Morning Minute 3/27/25:

“To Earn Respect, Be Respectful!”

Recently, I have had the “pleasure” of mentoring a young teenager. Tucker is a good looking young man with a sharp mind and good comprehension. Having previously played football, baseball, and basketball, plus running track for the last 2 years, he is quite athletic, and in great physical condition.

Tucker wants respect from his parents, teachers, and peers. But he has been struggling, and his grades have been dropping. His teachers are frustrated. His parents are disappointed. His attitude has made things worse. Tucker is beginning to understand that he cannot demand respect. It must be earned. And to earn respect, he must be respectful. This means being honest and trustworthy, disciplined, and reliable.

1st;“Honest & Trustworthy:” The first step to being respectable is honesty. People respect those who tell the truth, even when it is difficult or painful. If Tucker wants his teachers and parents to trust him, he must be honest about his schoolwork, his effort, and his actions. Lying about missing assignments, or making excuses when he fails to study, only causes others to lose faith in him. He needs to own his mistakes and commit to doing better. Because trust is built over time, the more honest he is, the more people will trust and believe in him.

2nd;“Disciplined & Hardworking:” Earning respect requires discipline, setting goals, and sticking to them, even when it is hard. Tucker has been skipping homework and not completing classwork. Now he understands that his success requires his effort. To improve his grades and prove to his parents and teachers he is serious, he must commit to his study plan, manage his time wisely, and stay focused on his goals. Discipline is not just about schoolwork. It applies to his attitude as well. He must control his temper, show patience, and approach challenges with a positive mindset.

3rd:“Reliable & Responsible:” Respect is earned through reliability. People respect those who keep their commitments. If Tucker commits to complete an assignment, help a teammate or family member, he must follow through. Being responsible means being on time, staying prepared, and proving that others can depend on him. As people see they can count on him, he will earn their trust, and their respect.

Respect isn’t given freely. It is earned through actions. Tucker is learning that by being honest and trustworthy, disciplined, and reliable, he is becoming a man that others will admire and respect. By staying committed to these principles, he will improve both his relationships and his results. He is beginning to understand that knowing what to do, without acting on that knowledge, will not help him achieve his goals.

He is learning that if he wants respect, he must be respectful.

“To Earn Respect, Be Respectful!”
