Morning Minute – 4.7.26

Values, Behaviors, & Actions - Drive Performance What you do, and how you do it, matters more than how you feel about it.

Recently, I had conversations with two teachers—both also parents.

They shared a common challenge:

Many students—and their parents—are focused on one thing:
👉 “That’s not fair.”

Now, fairness sounds reasonable.

But here’s the problem:

When you focus on fairness, you often lose focus on performance.

Consider this:

Two students, Cheryl and Renee, receive the same disappointing grade.

Cheryl says:
👉 “That’s not fair—I worked hard.”

Renee asks:
👉 “What did I miss, and how can I improve?”

Same assignment. Same teacher.

Different responses.

At the end of the term:

  • Cheryl is still frustrated
  • Renee has improved

Here’s the difference:

Renee is operating from values.

A value is not an opinion. Nor, is it a feeling. It’s a standard.

Standards don’t come from how we feel in the moment.

They come from something higher:

In life, we recognize rights like life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are given to us by our Creator—they are not opinions.

In work, standards of performance are set by what is required—not by how we feel.

Your values drive your behaviors.

Your behaviors determine your actions.

And your actions create your results.

We see this in the workplace as well.

Two employees are passed over for a promotion.

One says:
👉 “That’s not fair.”

The other asks:
👉 “What do I need to improve?”

A year later:

  • One is still frustrated
  • The other is promoted

The difference isn’t fairness.

It’s ownership of their values, behaviors, and results.

So, the real question isn’t:

👉 “Is this fair?”

The better question is:

👉 “What am I going to do about it?”

Because success isn’t determined by opinions or circumstances.

It’s determined by:

Who you are - is more important than how you feel.

And what you do - matters more than what you say.

If you’d like help strengthening values, behaviors, and performance within your team or family, let’s connect.

And remember:
Information without transformation is wasted energy.

If you’d like to use this message to stimulate action, here’s today’s short video.

That is today’s Morning Minute.
