Reader: 3 ways awareness helps you avoid danger, discover opportunities, and understand others! Morning Minute 11.3.26 What Are We Failing to Notice? Three ways awareness helps you avoid danger, discover opportunities, and understand others. Recently, while walking our Schnauzer, Gigi, I noticed a car preparing to back out of a driveway. The driver was talking on her phone, apparently unaware that we were approaching. Rather than assuming she would see us, Gigi and I stopped and waited. As she backed out, she noticed us, rolled down her window, and apologized. A potential accident was avoided because we were paying attention. How often are we so focused on what we're doing that we fail to recognize what's happening around us? Being alert isn't simply about avoiding danger. It's also about recognizing opportunities. Consider McDonald's in 1971. Franchisee Herb Peterson developed the Egg McMuffin. Ray Kroc recognized its potential, and McDonald's eventually expanded into a new market: Breakfast. They weren't simply adding another sandwich. By recognizing and acting on this opportunity, McDonald’s created more value for their guests and a new revenue stream for their restaurants. Sometimes the greatest opportunity isn't doing more of what we're already doing. It's recognizing what others need and are willing to pay for. Early in my automotive management career, someone I respected introduced me to a personality assessment called PerforMAX. It helped me recognize this: Communication isn't simply what we say. It's how others hear and interpret what we say. That changed how I approached employees and customers. Instead of simply presenting information, we began asking questions, listening carefully, and understanding what mattered most to each person. That approach helped us build relationships, earn trust, and create raving fans—not just customers. By helping them solve their problems, our sales and market share skyrocketed. Here are 3 actions that will help you become more aware of what's happening around you. 1. Observe. Look beyond the task in front of you. Recognize changing circumstances, warning signs, and emerging opportunities. 2. Listen. Ask questions. Then, listen carefully to their answers. Understand what others need, what concerns them, and how they perceive your words and actions. 3. Respond. Use what you've learned to avoid problems, make better decisions, and serve others more effectively. Life rewards action…not just knowledge. Here's today’s Morning Minute challenge. Before your day ends, ask yourself: What am I so focused on that I may miss noticing something more important? Understand this: Awareness without action changes nothing. Keep Learning! Keep Leading!
