Reader: 6 functions that develop people, improve performance, and create winning teams! Morning Minute 10.2.26 What Does Your Team Need from You? 6 functions that develop people, improve performance, and create winning teams. Recently, while watching a middle-school football team struggle through a difficult game, I found myself thinking less about the players and more about the importance of leadership to a team’s success. Talent matters. But talent alone doesn't create a winning team. As the leader of your team, are you a coach? A teacher? An instigator? A disciplinarian? An organizer? A mentor? The answer should be all six—because your team needs each at different times. Coach: Hire first for attitude, then train for skills. Put people in positions aligned with their strengths, and coach them toward continually improving performance. Teacher: Identify the knowledge and skills required for each position, then provide the training, and the practice, your people need to excel. Instigator: Before a team can finish, someone has to get it started. Provide the spark that creates action, maintains momentum, and pivots when circumstances change. Disciplinarian: Establish and enforce team standards. Train first. Allow people to practice and improve. Then hold everyone accountable to the standards and expectations required for success. Organizer: Coordinate people, resources, time, and priorities to achieve team goals while helping members achieve their personal and professional ambitions. Mentor: Develop people for more than the job they have today. Prepare someone to replace you, and you create greater opportunities for them, yourself, and the organization. Together, these six leadership functions create a culture of excellence. Winning teams aren't simply assembled. They are developed. There is also one leadership trap that can undermine all six - the micromanager. Micromanagers make all the decisions, and solve all the problems, instead of developing their people. Their team may comply—but they rarely grow. If your people cannot make decisions without you, you haven't developed a winning team. You've developed a team totally dependent upon you. Today's Challenge: Pick one of these six leadership functions. Analyze it. Practice it. Measure it. For the next week, improve your performance in that area. Then record what changes in your team's performance because you committed to your own self-improvement. Your team's future depends on what you do today to prepare them for tomorrow. Keep Learning! Keep Leading! And remember: Information without transformation is wasted energy! That is today's Morning Minute. *** Quote for today: “Leadership is not about domination – it is about service!” CHARLIE KIRK *** Here are some recent Morning Minutes you may have missed with actionable ideas, useful instruction, and step-by-step methods to help you, your family, and/or your team to be more, do more, and achieve more.
