This Labor Day weekend, walk into your kitchen and look at your refrigerator. You probably rarely give it much thought. You open the door, the light comes on, and your food stays cold. Now, look at the name on the door. That's the company we credit with making your refrigerator. But no company made it. People did. Thousands of them. Before a refrigerator could be assembled, people had to obtain the raw materials to build it. Miners extracted iron ore used to make steel and mined copper for electrical wiring and refrigeration components. Other workers produced aluminum, glass, plastics, insulation, refrigerant, rubber, and countless other materials. Then more people went to work. Steelworkers transformed raw materials into usable metal. Manufacturers produced compressors, motors, coils, wiring, controls, shelving, seals, fasteners, and hundreds of other components. But having all the parts still doesn't create a refrigerator. Engineers had to design it. Toolmakers built the equipment required to manufacture it. Factory workers employed the systems that built the cabinet, installed insulation, assembled the cooling system, connected the electronics, installed the interior, and tested the finished product. And it still wasn't in your kitchen. Someone packaged it. Someone moved it into a warehouse. Someone scheduled its shipment. Someone loaded the truck. Someone drove it hundreds—or perhaps thousands—of miles. Someone sold it. And finally, someone delivered and installed it in your home. Now consider something even more remarkable. No single person in that entire process could have made your refrigerator alone. Miners need tools. Factory workers need machinery. Engineers need computers. Truck drivers need roads. Every one of those required the work of still more people. That's interdependence. Different people. Different skills. Different jobs. One common result. We accomplish extraordinary things when individual people contribute their skills to a common purpose—while depending upon others to do the same. This Labor Day, let's think beyond simply celebrating work. Let's appreciate the people who work. Because behind everything that makes our lives safer, easier, healthier, and more comfortable are people we will never meet—depending upon each other and cooperating to get the job done. Here's your Labor Day challenge: Choose one ordinary object you use today and ask: How many people had to do their jobs well for me to have this? Then remember: No job is insignificant when someone else is depending upon your work. Keep Learning! Keep Leading! And remember: Information without transformation is wasted energy. That is today's Morning Minute. *** Today's Morning Minute displays the complexity of free market capitalism. The government not does dictate what must be built. A need is identified and a product to solve that need is set in motion. Then the process begins to gather the materials required to plan, design, create, build, and get to solution to the end user. There are 1000's of decisions, processes, and and parts required to get that product to market. This cannot effectively be controlled by government. The people involved in designing, manufacturing, and delivering the product are driven by demand - market needs. This system, free market capitalism, has produced more individual wealth and raised more people out of poverty than any other economic system in the world. May God continue to bless the USA! *** Here are some recent Morning Minutes you may have missed with actionable ideas, useful instruction, and step-by-step methods to help you, your family, and/or your team to be more, do more, and achieve more.
