Reader: How everyday behaviors create both credibility and influence! Morning Minute 9.25.26 Why Should Anyone Follow You? How everyday behaviors create credibility and influence. Start by asking this question: “What am I consistently doing that gives people a reason to listen to and follow me?” These aren't just traits I've studied. They're behaviors I've practiced throughout my life to improve myself and to be more useful to the people I’ve led. I haven't always practiced them perfectly…and still don't. That's why I keep working on them. 1. Integrity — Do what you say you will do. Keep promises. Tell the truth when it costs you something. Admit when you're wrong. Be consistent. 2. Competence — Know what you're doing. Demonstrate that you can solve problems and produce results. When you don't know, say so—and keep learning. 3. Reliability — Be there when you're needed. Show up. Be prepared. Meet deadlines. Follow through. Reliability is one of the most powerful ways to earn respect. 4. Respect — Give it before expecting it. Listen without immediately interrupting or correcting. Learn people's names. Treat every person as someone who matters. 5. Courage — Say what needs to be said, respectfully. Challenge others when necessary. Make difficult decisions. Accept responsibility when something goes wrong. 6. Humility — Be confident enough to keep learning. Ask questions. Seek advice. Give others credit. Change your mind when a better way appears. Learn to say: “I was wrong. Let's fix it.” 7. Invest in Others — Help other people become better. Teach instead of merely directing. Explain the why as well as the what. Share opportunities. Help others achieve their goals. 8. Exercise Good Judgment — Give people confidence in your decisions. Listen before speaking. Consider the facts and the consequences. Make a decision. Accept responsibility. Then learn from the results. Understand this: Attention can be demanded. Authority can be assigned. However: Respect must be earned. Influence must be developed. Leadership must be demonstrated. You must decide what kind of leader you want to become. Then consistently behave like that leader. When you control what you say and how you say it—what you do and how you do it—you don't have to demand respect or insist that others follow you. Your behavior gives them reasons to. So, ask again: “What am I consistently doing that gives people a reason to listen to and follow me?” Then, identify orone trait on this list that needs improvement. And begin improving it today. And remember: Information without transformation is wasted energy! Keep Learning! Keep Leading!
