How Great Leaders Inspire Real Cooperation!

Think about the best, most effective leader you know.

What is it about that person that you remember most?

When you reflect on leaders whom people truly want to follow, three attributes consistently stand out: articulation, collaboration, and accountability.

Let's examine each...

Articulation:

The words you choose, and how you deliver them, say a great deal about you as a leader. Consider the difference between saying, “You must stop making the same stupid mistake,” versus “Is there a better way to accomplish this than what you just demonstrated?”

Both statements communicate dissatisfaction. However, the first places responsibility for their improvement on you. The second places it where it belongs, on the individual. Asking thoughtful questions also allows the person asking them to maintain control of the conversation. How you speak reflects not only your intelligence, but also your respect for others.

Collaboration:

For people to collaborate effectively, they must want to follow you. That desire is built on trust, competence, and honesty.

How you discuss issues, whether you invite input, and the language you use, all influence cooperation. Questions like, “How do you see this opportunity for improvement?” or “If you were in control, what would you do?” invite participation and ownership.

When team members are included in identifying both problems and solutions, even when a different solution is ultimately chosen, it builds mutual trust and respect.

Accountability:

One effective way to encourage accountability is by using these four questions from Dale Carnegie:

  • What exactly is the problem?
  • What are all the possible causes?
  • What are all the possible solutions?
  • Which solution do you recommend, and why?

These questions move the conversation beyond identifying problems and into developing real solutions. They shift responsibility appropriately, create mutual respect, and help develop future leaders who can contribute to the team’s continued growth.

Morning Minute Challenge: In your next improvement conversation with a team member, pay close attention to what you ask, and how you ask it. Use your questions to communicate your desire for growth, strengthen collaboration, and create shared accountability for the outcome.
