How to Become Indispensable

Seven personal success traits that create opportunities others never receive.

Growing up, I was often told not to make waves, to blend in with the crowd, and to avoid standing out if I wanted to get ahead. That advice came from people who had survived the Great Depression and World War II. And, it served them well.

But I chose a different path.

Rather than blending in, I wanted to become so valuable that opportunities would continually find me. I wanted to be the person people could rely on, trust, and call upon when challenges needed to be solved.

The following seven traits helped me build a successful career, and they can help guide your path to success as well.

1. RELIABILITY
As a working teen, I noticed that many people valued time off more than opportunity. There were always opportunities for those willing to step up when others stepped away. By being dependable and willing to help when needed, you become the person leaders think of first when opportunities arise.

2. COMPETENCE
Working in restaurants, I learned every job—from clean-up to prep, prep to cook, cook to waiter, and eventually from managing one restaurant to supervising seventeen. People who learn every aspect of a business are the first to be trusted with greater responsibility and promoted to leadership positions.

3. EMOTIONAL COMPOSURE
Throughout my career, staying calm during crises allowed me to work through mistakes, equipment failures, staff shortages, and countless unexpected challenges. The world is full of people who lose focus when problems occur. Remaining calm under pressure is one of the most valuable leadership skills you can develop.

4. ADAPTABILITY
Life and business are constantly changing. New products, processes, changing teams, and turnaround opportunities have all created growth opportunities throughout my career. Being adaptable helps you remain ready, competitive, and prepared for whatever comes next.

5. INTEGRITY
Being honest and taking responsibility for my mistakes has consistently opened doors to greater opportunities. When people know they can trust what you say, and rely on what you do, you become a trusted ally—not just another employee.

6. PROBLEM SOLVING
Accepting responsibility for solving problems led me to turnaround opportunities that others avoided. Those who can identify problems, create solutions, and execute change will always distinguish themselves from those who make excuses or avoid challenges.

7. SELF-DISCIPLINE
Self-discipline is choosing the right path when it is difficult and rejecting the wrong path when it is easy. It is the foundation of personal growth and professional success. It also attracts the right people and opportunities into your life.

When you develop these seven traits, something remarkable happens.

People begin to trust you with greater responsibilities.

Leaders begin to seek your input.

Opportunities begin to find you.

You stop competing with the crowd - because you have separated yourself from it.

You become indispensable.

And remember:

Information without transformation is wasted energy!

That is today's Morning Minute.
