Reader: What critics often miss about risk, reward, and value creation (click image for video version) Morning Minute 6.16.26 The Lasting Value of Innovation What critics often miss about risk, reward, and value creation. It’s easy to admire success and criticize wealth. It is much harder to risk failure, endure criticism, and build something that did not exist before. That’s what innovators do. What do Thomas Edison, Walt Disney, Truett Cathy, and Elon Musk have in common? They transformed different industries, created millions of jobs, improved lives, and built organizations that continue to shape our world. Yet, before they were celebrated, they were doubted. Before they succeeded, they failed. Before they were admired, they were criticized. And despite those setbacks, they kept innovating. Every successful company creates more than profit. It creates jobs, careers, and tax revenue. It creates charitable giving, new skills and industries, and new expectations for what is possible. America’s response after Pearl Harbor is a powerful example. After the attack in 1941, American manufacturers rapidly converted from making appliances, cars, and consumer goods to producing the ships, planes, and weapons needed to win the war. That did not happen by accident. It happened because America already had the manufacturing strength, entrepreneurial drive, and productive capacity to respond. The same free enterprise system that created opportunity in peacetime became a national asset in wartime. Here is one of the great benefits of a free society. We are free to try, free to build, free to fail, free to learn, and free to try again. And when someone takes great risk, solves difficult problems, creates enormous value, and succeeds, we should be careful before we resent their reward. The question is not, “Why does one person have so much?” The better question is, “How many people benefited because someone refused to quit?” Consider the jobs created, the lives improved, and the opportunities that would never have existed had they given up. That is what critics often miss about innovation. They see the reward but not the risk, the success but not the struggle, and the wealth but not the value created. And they often forget that the future is not built by those criticizing from the sidelines, but by the men and women willing to put everything on the line. Paraphrasing Theodore Roosevelt: “The future is rarely built by those sitting in the stands. It is built by the men and women willing to step into the arena, risk failure, and dare greatly, whose faces are marked by dust, sweat, and struggle, who strive, fail, learn, and try again. And whether they win or lose, they will never stand among those who knew neither victory nor defeat.” And remember: Information without transformation is wasted energy! This is the document that galvanized support for our freedom from British tyranny in 1776. One of the most important declarations is the statement that our rights come from God - not from government. Because of this our government is prohibited from denying us of the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This is the basis of American Exceptionalism - the platform which provides us with our God-given rights to be more, do more, and create more. And, to enjoy the benefits of what we have produced. *** *** Here are some recent Morning Minutes you may have missed with actionable ideas, useful instruction, and step-by-step methods to help you, your family, and/or your team to be more, do more, and achieve more.
