Let Them Think What They Will Why criticism is often evidence that you're making a difference

Have you ever discovered that someone was questioning your decisions, criticizing your actions, or discussing your motives behind your back?

If so, welcome to leadership!

Zig Ziglar once shared,

"Don't be distracted by criticism. Remember, the only taste of success some people have is when they take a bite out of you!"

If you choose to accomplish anything meaningful, someone will eventually misunderstand your motives, criticize your decisions, or exaggerate your mistakes. The only way to avoid criticism altogether is to do nothing. That isn't an option if you want to grow, lead, or make a difference.

It helps to understand why people talk about others.

1. They want to learn from you.

Some people are genuinely curious about your success. They want to understand what motivates you, how you make decisions, and how they can improve their own lives. Their interest comes from admiration, not malice.

2. They want to be heard.

Some people have an opinion about everything. They enjoy being viewed as informed, insightful, or "in the know." Discussing the latest news, events, or people keeps them at the center of the conversation.

3. They want to avoid looking at themselves.

Some people criticize others because it keeps the spotlight off their own shortcomings. Focusing on someone else's mistakes allows them to avoid confronting the changes they need to make in their own lives.

Now consider these insightful and important questions:

  1. If no one is talking about your decisions, your actions, or your leadership, are you making enough of a difference?
  2. Is there a grain of truth in their criticism that can help you become better?
  3. Are you giving too much weight to the opinions of people you would never seek advice from?

In life, we are called to act, to make decisions, and to lead. Not every decision will be popular. Not every action will be understood. But your character, your purpose, and your results will ultimately speak louder than their opinions.

Learn from fair criticism.

Ignore foolish criticism.

Never allow either to keep you from doing meaningful work.

And remember,

Information without transformation is wasted energy!

Keep Learning! Keep Leading!

That is today's Morning Minute.
