Reader: Morning Minute (1.9.26) Diego and his father traveled from El Salvador to Savannah for Diego’s year as our Rotary Exchange student. Their flight was scheduled to arrive at 12:50pm. I arrived early at the airport at 11:30am. Their flight landed early at 12:10pm. Being already there, I was able to greet them immediately, without them waiting, or wondering if someone was coming. At lunch later that day, Diego’s father told his son: “Unlike in El Salvador, where an appointment at Noon means it’s acceptable to arrive at 2:00pm. In the United States you must arrive 15 minutes early. To be polite and respectful, always arrive early!” Diego followed his father’s advice throughout his year as an exchange student in Savannah. Punctuality is the practice of completing tasks or fulfilling obligations at, or before, a designated time. It reflects important character traits and delivers meaningful benefits. Let’s look at three of them. RESPECT: Being punctual shows respect for yourself and for others. It signals reliability, organization, and professionalism. When someone is consistently late, others often perceive them to be disrespectful or unreliable. My being at the airport early meant Diego and his father did not have to wait, worry, or feel overlooked. ORGANIZATION: Punctuality requires planning and time management. Organized people create clear priorities and deadlines, allowing them to move efficiently from one task to the next. By being early, you set an expectation and the standard for those around you. PROFESSIONALISM: Respect, reliability, and organization are foundational professional traits. How you manage your time directly impacts how clients, coworkers, and associates perceive you. And, whether they will trust you with greater responsibility. There is one additional benefit to being early that is often overlooked. Arriving early to meetings and seminars has given me opportunities for one-on-one conversations with people I wanted to learn from. Those include leaders such as Zig Ziglar, Grant Cardone, Dave Anderson, Jackie Cooper, Joe Verde, Sam Bryant, and many others. That access and those conversations have had a lasting impact on my leadership journey. MORNING MINUTE CHALLENGE: Punctuality: The Habit That Creates Big Advantages!
