Self-Respect: The Foundation of a Meaningful Life Examine and commit to these actions that create and sustain genuine self-respect.

Before we can build self-respect, it helps to understand how it differs from self-esteem.

Self-esteem is viewing yourself positively.

There are three basic types:

Performance-based: This type is tied to achievement, productivity, and success.

Attribute-based: This type is based on what a person has rather than what they do.

Others-based: This type depends on the approval, validation, and opinions of others.

Self-respect is a healthy regard for your own value, dignity, and moral character. It is the foundation of self-worth that guides you to set firm boundaries, uphold your personal values, and refuse to tolerate mistreatment from yourself or others.

Here are five actions that will guide you toward healthy and lasting self-respect:

1. Stop regretting your past mistakes and performances.

Use them as learning experiences that help guide your future success. Learn the lesson, then move forward.

2. Stop worrying about the future.

Worry creates self-doubt that clouds your judgment and weakens your confidence. Trust yourself—and trust God—to help you handle whatever life places before you.

3. Stop looking to others for happiness.

Your peace comes from within and is not dependent upon another person's approval. True peace and happiness are gifts from God. Be mindful to look within yourself and to God for the lasting peace you seek.

4. Stop overextending yourself for people who consistently fail to appreciate or reciprocate your efforts.

When your happiness depends on others responding as you expect, disappointment often follows. Give freely, but do not sacrifice your self-respect in pursuit of acceptance.

5. Remember that self-respect isn't built solely by what you give; it is also built by what you refuse to tolerate.

Your values create a worthwhile and orderly life for yourself and others. When others repeatedly disregard those values, have the courage to create healthy distance from them.

***

Self-respect is developed through the daily discipline of becoming more, doing more, and accomplishing more.

Set high standards for yourself.

Surround yourself with people who encourage those standards.

Always strive to do what is right—even when it is difficult.

And be the change you wish to create in your life - and in the lives of others.
