Team Member Turbulence: How Would You React?

Conflict between strong team members is inevitable.

How you handle it determines whether performance improves, or resentment grows.

Below are three real-life examples of team member turbulence I’ve personally encountered.

As you read each one, think about how you would handle it.

1) Mike & Andrew – Fast-Food Restaurant

Mike and Andrew were both effective managers.

· Mike excelled at getting results through creativity and flexibility.

· Andrew excelled at getting results by strictly following the rules.

Over time, their opposing styles created friction that began impacting the entire team.

During a hectic lunch rush, their disagreements boiled over into a heated argument in front of others. After the rush ended, you sit both of them down privately.

What options do you have for resolving this conflict?

Which option would you choose? And WHY?

2) Caitlin & Melissa – Call Center

Caitlin, a lead agent, had trained Melissa from the start. As Melissa’s production improved, she became increasingly frustrated with Caitlin’s direction and decision-making.

The tension between them began to affect the morale and performance of the entire call center.

During a slow period, you bring both of them together privately.

What options do you have for addressing this situation?

Which approach do you believe would be most effective? And, WHY?

3) John & Matthew – Auto Dealership:

John and Matthew were both above-average salespeople.

John had a 4:00 PM appointment scheduled with a couple. The couple arrived early at 1:00 PM while John was busy with another client and unaware they were there.

Matthew greeted the couple and sold them an SUV—without notifying John.

Later, when the couple missed their 4:00 PM appointment, John called them. They explained they had come in earlier, asked for John, and were told he wasn’t available.

John was furious.

What options do you have for resolving this conflict?

Which option would you choose? And, WHY?

All three of these situations are real. There is no single “right” answer to any of them.

The real question is this:

What process would you use to resolve conflict between strong performers—without losing trust, morale, or results?
