Reader: "Understanding that freedom, and the choices we make, require personal responsibility" Morning Minute 10.3.25 “FREEDOM: Your Power, and Your Responsibility!” Sam was born in Sicily in the late 1800s. After serving in the Italian army, and experiencing the corruption in both government and the mafia, Sam and his wife immigrated legally to the United States early in the 1900s. He settled in western New York state, worked for the railroad, and raised 3 children after his wife died. His son…was my father. Sam taught his children this simple truth: with freedom you have the power to choose, and the responsibility for those choices. He lived his life guided by that simple truth. Freedom provides you the power to win, to fail, to try again, and to keep on trying. You choose where to live, work, and study. You choose whom you associate with, if and when to marry, plus what goals you want to achieve. However, your choices affect others. Dishonesty, irresponsibility, lack of discipline, and disrespect create consequences for yourself and others. Your power to choose will create either positive or negative outcomes – both of which you are responsible for. In our republic we elect representatives to make decisions for us. That gives them great power, and great responsibility. We, as a free people, must hold them accountable for the decisions they make on our behalf. Two final reflections on our freedom and our power: 1. Immigrants to our country must come here legally, obey our laws, learn and respect our language and customs, and be able to provide for themselves. The freedom to choose is inseparable from the responsibility for our choices. 2. With the great power given to those in government goes great responsibility. They must be truthful, because power corrupts – and absolute power corrupts absolutely. The future of our country is in our hands. If we embrace both the responsibility and the power of freedom – and follow God’s direction – our country will continue to thrive now, and in the future “FREEDOM: Your Power, and Your Responsibility!” That is today’s Morning Minute. *** *** If a family member, coworker, or someone you know may find this message helpful, interesting, and/or informative, please share it with them.
