The Cost—and Value—of Integrity

Short term gains can create long term limitations.

I once was asked to choose between providing for my family… and keeping my integrity.

There was a season in my life when everything felt uncertain. I had a wife, two young children, and had just lost my job during a recession.

An opportunity came along, and I poured myself into it—designed the restaurant, built it from the ground up, and helped make it successful.

Then, came an unexpected phone call.

I was told to begin taking most of my income in cash… and only report a small portion for taxes.

And then the explanation: “That’s how we do things.”

Now here’s what made that moment real…

I needed the income. My family depended on it.

And walking away meant stepping right back into uncertainty.

But I also knew this:

If I agreed, I wouldn’t just be accepting a paycheck—I’d be accepting a standard.

One that would follow me… and eventually define me.

So, I made the decision to walk away. No backup plan. No guarantees.

Looking back, that moment taught me something I’ve never forgotten:

Integrity isn’t just about doing the right thing—it’s about keeping control of your future.

Because the moment you compromise your standards, your options begin to shrink.

You become tied to people and situations that depend on you continuing that compromise.

But when you hold your ground, even when it costs you, you stay free.

Free to move.
Free to grow.
Free to be trusted.

And over time, trust is what creates opportunity.

You may not face the exact situation I did. But you will face moments where the easier path
asks you to lower your standards.

Here’s what that sounds like: “This is just how it’s done. Everyone does it.” Or, “No one will know.”

In those moments, remember this: Short-term gains can create long-term limitations.

Protect your integrity; not because it guarantees success, but because it keeps your future open.

I didn’t know it at the time, but walking away from that situation led me into a completely different career…one that lasted over four decades.

Not because I planned it that way. But because I refused to close doors I couldn’t yet see.

The Cost—and Value—of Integrity

Your opportunities in life won’t just be determined by what you choose to pursue. But by the standards you refuse to compromise.

That is today’s Morning Minute.

Ever notice how that groups and individuals who want to hide what they are doing always use language like "protecting our democracy!" or "level the playing field." They use ambiguous phases like these to hide their efforts to seize more power or to limit your opportunities. A perfect example is the redistricting initiative for tomorrow in Virginia. Promoters claim they want to inject fairness and equity in elections. Their real effort is to disenfranchise 40% of Virginia voters by ensuring that their party will win 9 out of 10 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, This in a state that votes 55% with Democrats and 45% with Republicans. Plus, they only want this for this year's congressional election.

Next time you hear one of these phrases do your diligence - investigate for yourself to find out what they are really trying to accomplish. Then make a decision in alignment with your values.

And remember: Information without Transformation is wasted energy!"

Reader: I was given an opportunity, but not the one I wanted 🎥 Watch today’s 2:41 Morning Minute: Entering the 9th grade, I joined the high school band. Because I played trumpet, I was placed in the “B” band—which I expected. Near the end of the year, the director asked if I would stay there. I thanked him—but respectfully declined. I wanted to grow. The next day, he offered me a different path—switching to French horn. I accepted. Three years later, I made All-State band on the French horn....
