“When Your Plan Isn’t Working: Change It!”

There are times when your plan simply isn’t working — and doing more of the same won’t change the outcome. As the saying goes, "Doing the same thing again and again while expecting different results is the definition of insanity!

Change is essential when your current approach isn’t delivering results.

In World War II, just 30 days after the Allies invaded France, the Germans launched a massive counterattack with hundreds of their most powerful tanks — a tactic that had brought them years of success. Knowing their own tanks were outmatched, the Americans changed strategy. Instead of responding with tanks, they deployed hundreds of four-man infantry teams armed with anti-tank weapons. Within 24 hours, over 300 German tanks were destroyed, ending their offensive.

A similar shift happened when the United States took over construction of the Panama Canal. The French had failed after years of trying to use the same techniques that had worked in Egypt’s flat desert. But Panama was entirely different. There was dense jungle, mountains, monsoon rains, a raging river, and deadly diseases. To succeed, the Americans had to completely change tactics: combat malaria and yellow fever, drain swamps, blast through mountains, construct their own concrete plant, and design a new lock system that could raise ships over the continental divide. Their adaptability connected two oceans — and changed global trade forever.

In both cases, success came only after old tactics were abandoned and new strategies embraced.

So, what do you do when your team isn’t winning?
Here are six steps to help you adapt, change, and win:

1. Identify the problem. You can’t win if you won’t define what is wrong.

2. Look in the mirror. If the problem is you, how must you change to win?

3. Analyze the Four Ps: Do you have the right People? Are your Processes effective? Do your Products or Services meet real client needs? Is your Promotion reaching your ideal audience?

4. Engage your team. Those closest to the problem often hold the key to the solution — and they buy in when they help shape that solution.

5. Execute with massive action. Support your people, monitor progress, and pivot when necessary.

6. Learn from victory. Conduct an After-Action Report to lock in lessons and keep everyone focused on continuous improvement.
